Traffic Stop Ends In Suicide In Bozeman – Victim’s Name Released [Update]

In the early morning hours of Wednesday, May 29, Wade Christiansen was stopped by a Bozeman Police Officer for a traffic offense.  He got out of the vehicle he was driving with a handgun and fatally shot himself.

The death was investigated by the Gallatin County Coroner’s Office.  Despite the incident being videotaped by more than one officer on scene, the suicide determination was corroborated by a forensic examination at the State Crime Lab.

In the early morning hours, (May 29, 2013) at about 1:26 a.m., a Bozeman Police Officer tried to stop a Jeep Wrangler near West Main Street and 5th Avenue.

The Jeep was speeding, failed to stop for a red light and almost collided with the officer’s patrol car.

The Jeep stopped in the middle of the 400 block of West Main Street and the male driver immediately got out with a handgun held to his head.

After a brief interaction with officers the male shot himself in the head. The man was taken to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital by ambulance but did not survive the self-inflicted wound.

Detectives with the Bozeman Police Department are investigating the incident along with the Gallatin County Coroner. The identity of the man will be released by the coroner’s office at a later time.
