Montana Taxpayers Hit With Unexpected Surprise This Year
Montana residents may be surprised when they file income taxes this year.
The deadline to file your taxes is April 15, and if you haven't filed your taxes yet, you might be surprised when you do.
A Big Surprise For Montanans This Tax Season
In the past, I've always received a refund from both State and Federal when I've filed my taxes, but that wasn't the case this year. For the first time since becoming a resident, I had to pay the State of Montana. Apparently, I'm not the only one.

Several Montana residents have been caught off guard when filing income taxes, and many are reporting owing the state for the first time. People have been voicing their frustrations on social media.
Why Do Montana Residents Have To Pay This Year?
According to an article published on the KTVH website, the issue is a result of a big change in Montana's tax structure. A major overhaul, known as Senate Bill 399 was approved in 2024.
Luckily, I didn't owe the state much, but that isn't the case for many Montana residents. The state's tax structure change has reportedly hit married couples who file jointly the hardest.
Many people rely on tax returns as a way to catch up on bills or go on vacation. Unfortunately, some people might be forced to change plans this year because they won't be getting back as much as they had hoped.
