Cowboys and Montana

Montana was a vital part of this history.

Many come to Montana to become a cowboy or cowgirl.

Shows like Yellowstone and its spinoffs have made folks want to buy Western attire, ride a horse, and feel like they run a cattle ranch.

These folks travel to Missoula, Whitefish, or Bozeman to feel like a Dutton, but is that the best place?

Several places in Montana are better if you want to feel like a cowboy.

Montana's Wild West

Several towns still have remnants of their Old West days, but which is the best?

American Charm published 12 Wild West Towns Stuck in the 1800s, and one Montana spot made the list.

Which one?

It's a little complicated.

American Charm says Gernet is a town still stuck in the 1800s.

That makes sense, but should it count?

We argue that Garnet shouldn't count because the area is technically a ghost town.

The town only has a handful of residents and still exists because it's a state park.

Garnet is a place for historical tours and movie sets for Westerns, but it's not a living town stuck in the 1800s.

There is another town in Montana that makes more sense.

Virginia City

This town was the Wild West.

Virginia City is a massive summer tourist destination.

The town was formerly the capital of Montana's early days, still has buildings from the 1800s, and has several businesses that were around during those days.

Virginia City still has a thriving community that hosts local events, rodeos, and more.

Virginia City is where you can see what Montana was like before statehood.

Virginia City is where you go if you want to see what a cowboy's life was like during the 1800s.
