A new scam is surging in Montana, and they tried to get me.
EZPass Scam in Montana
This scam is unique and could trip up people.
While working today, I received a text that made me instantly worried.
It was an alert that declared I owed money for an EZPass Toll Road and if left unpaid, my driver's license, registration, and car would be suspended and marked illegal.
If you don't know, several states use toll roads for commuters to help pay for bridge and road maintenance. Montana isn't one of those states. If you are on a road trip, you might receive a bill in the mail, but never a text.
The first problem this scam has is the area code it's from. It was a Michigan area code.
I've never been or driven through Michigan, so why am I receiving this text?
I dug around and found out this is a new scam hitting a lot of states, including Montana.
A Michigan paper reports that the FBI is aware of this scam and is working on finding the culprits. The problem is that these scammers spoof numbers to make the texts seem legit, and many have fallen victim to the scam.
Keep an eye out, and spread the word.
