Winter Storm Warning/Winter Weather Advisory

Memorial Day weekend forecast not looking great for outdoor activities…

The National Weather Service in Great Falls has issued a Winter
Storm Warning for elevations above 6000 feet for heavy snow… which
is in effect from 6 PM this evening to noon MDT Sunday. A Winter
Weather Advisory for elevations below 6000 feet has also been
issued. This Winter Weather Advisory for elevations below 6000
feet for snow… is in effect from 11 PM Friday to noon MDT

* Timing: snow will develop in the higher elevations tonight and
continue through Sunday morning. Heaviest snowfall is expected
Friday night and Saturday. Below 6000 feet… a mix of rain and
snow will become all snow on Friday night and then change back
to a mix by Saturday afternoon.

* Snow accumulations: above 6000 feet… snow accumulations of 8 to
14 inches are expected with locally higher amounts possible on
north facing slopes. Below 6000 feet… snow accumulations of 2
to 4 inches are expected.

* Visibility: during periods of more intense snowfall… visibilities
may be reduced to less than one mile.

* Other impacts: mountain passes and roadways will become snow and
slush covered above 6000 feet. Outdoor recreationalists should
be prepared for winter weather conditions. Heavy wet snow may
cause damage to trees and power lines.

* Locations affected include: White Sulphur Springs… Battle Ridge
Pass… Bozeman… Bozeman Pass… Targhee Pass… West
Yellowstone… Stanford… Lewistown… Lewistown Divide… Big Hole
Pass… Chief Joseph Pass… Dillon… Monida Pass… Great
Falls… Kings Hill Pass… Ennis… Norris Hill… Raynolds
Pass… Twin Bridges.

Precautionary/preparedness actions…

A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather
conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of
snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in
an emergency. If you must… keep an extra flashlight… food… and
water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means that periods of snow
will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow
covered roads and limited visibilities… and use caution while
