Teenage Sweethearts Reunited After 70 Years Apart

Elderly Woman on phone
ABC

There aren’t going to be too many tales of long-lost love in the future, thanks to social media sites which make it just about impossible for folks to really lose touch with each other.

But there was obviously no Facebook when Betty Hove and John Grosch meet in the early 1940s. He was 17 and she was 16 and they quickly became sweethearts. But as their relationship began to blossom, Grosch joined the Navy and was shipped off to fight in World War II.

Although he left her a photo, he had no forwarding address, so Hove wasn’t able to contact him during the war.

All I had to go on was the news reel in the theaters standing there, watching and watching and watching,” she explained.

Hove, who was widowed a few years ago, went on to marry twice. But she said she never really got over Grosch. So when a friend asked her late last year if there was anyone she would like to find online, she immediately remembered her long-lost sweetheart.

Although she feared he might be dead, he was very much alive and living Georgia. They quickly rekindled their relationship on the phone, and Hove flew from California to Georgia recently to see her long-lost love for the first time in more than 70 years.
