Montana is famous for a lot of things, one of them being that for many years you could darn near go almost as fast as you wanted on the interstates and highways. Of course, all good things come to an end, and back in the late 90s, the legislature decided to change all of that.

Even after the change, folks continued to go fast and for many years it was said that if you just kept a few bucks on the dash, you could pay whoever pulled you over and then be on your way.

I can tell you that on one spring day back in 2008, I tested that theory as I was driving with a bit of a lead foot outside of Missoula and was pulled over by one of our fine Montana State Highway Patrol Officers, he let me off with a warning but told me the next time, it would cost me 20 bucks.
