LSD Is the New Cure For Alcoholism?

Alcoholism isn’t something that should be laughed at, but a possible cure could make at least the patient giggle — it’s LSD.

A new study from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology looked at the results of some alcohol treatment programs in the late 1960′s, in which some of the participants were given a hit of the ‘Rainbow Skittles.” Almost 60 percent of the participants who took the hallucinogen were able to stay sober for six months. The results were published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology.

The scientific effects of this unusual treatment aren’t fully known. Some speculate that it blocks serotonin in the brain, the chemical that regulates a person’s hunger and moods. One former British government drug adviser who lost his job for suggesting that drugs like ecstasy and LSD were less harmful than alcohol called the results “as good as anything we’ve got” for treating alcoholism. He claims the effects of the LSD helps with treatment because it “requires huge changes in the way you see yourself. That’s what LSD does.”

So apparently, seeing yourself as a giant bunny rabbit chasing a lollipop with legs through a crowded mall is a step in the right direction.
