Joey and Rory Open Up About Welcoming a Baby With Down Syndrome
Fans already know that Joey and Rory Feek of country duo Joey and Rory are incredibly humble, loving and open people onstage and off, so it’s no surprise that they share their honest thoughts about what it was like to welcome a baby girl with Down Syndrome earlier this year.
Indiana Boon Feek was born on Feb. 17, and the couple were, of course, elated with their 8 lbs., 2 oz. bundle of joy. She was (and is) a welcome addition into the Feek family, which also includes Rory’s two daughters Hopie and Heidi from a previous marriage.
In a detailed blog post, Rory gives the details of what has happened since sweet Indy’s birth. She was delivered naturally at home, which Joey admits was the “single greatest thing she’s ever experienced in her life.”
However, as the days passed, concern arose about the couple’s baby girl, so she underwent genetic chromosome testing at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. Explains Rory, “It has been confirmed that Indiana has Down Syndrome. Although that news came at first as a surprise to us, Joey and I wouldn’t have changed a thing.”
He continues, “During the pregnancy, we never did an ultrasound, or saw a doctor, nor would it have made any difference if we had. We trusted that God would give us the baby He wanted us to have… and He has. Out of all the parents in the world, He has chosen us to care for and raise this special gift. The baby is healthy and doing wonderful and Joey and I are loving each and every minute that we have with her. We can’t wait to see where this new chapter in our lives leads us and what wonderful story unfolds in the coming years.”
The country singer also shared an intimate video on his blog, which visually chronicles the birth and even gives fans the chance to hear Indiana’s first cries. It’s a beautiful, heartwarming and extremely emotional clip that will no doubt leave some fans in tears, too.
