A 17-year-old male needed medical attention on Thursday while hiking the Lava Lake Trail. Gallatin County Sheriff's deputies, paramedics with the Big Sky Fire Department, and members of the Gallatin County Search and Rescue all responded after the young hiker suffered an allergic reaction to an insect bite, resulting in difficulty breathing.

Other hikers contacted emergency services after getting off the mountain. Search and Rescue members and a paramedic hiked to the patient and then escorted him down to a waiting medical staff where he was evaluated. He later went to Bozeman Deaconess Hospital.

Sheriff Brian Gootkin would like to remind backcountry hikers to use caution when in the backcountry.  Tell people where you are going and when to expect you back.  Enjoy the backcountry with other people when possible and carry a means of communication with you.
