Chris Stapleton Takes Best Country Album Award at 2016 Grammys

Chris Stapleton won the statue for Best Country Album for Traveller at the 2016 Grammy Awards on Monday night, topping off a great night for some of the biggest stars in country music.

Stapleton beat out Sam Hunt's debut album, Montevallo, Little Big Town's Pain Killer, The Blade from Ashley Monroe and Kacey Musgraves' sophomore effort Pageant Material for the honor, which is one of the biggest awards a country musician can win in a career.

"I want to thank Taylor Swift for glitter-bombing me before I got up here for this," Stapleton said as soon as he walked up to the microphone to accept his trophy. "This is something that I never ever dream of. I'm super grateful for it."

He continued, being sure to mention many of the same people he thanked at the 2015 CMA Awards. "I want to thank my wife first of all, all the folks at universal, Red Light, all the guys in the band, all the guys in the crew, all the fans, everybody who's ever helped me out along the way."

Producer Dave Cobb then took over to thank their families "for putting up with us and letting us make this record and thanks to Chris for letting me in the studio."

The Best Country Album win was Stapleton's second of the night, following a Best Country Solo Performance win given during the pre-show ceremony. He's also nominated in all-genre Album of the Year category, which will be given out toward the end of the CBS broadcast.

Stapleton's debut solo album seemed all but forgotten until his surprise CMA nominations. Nominees for the the 2016 Grammys were decided prior to his historic night at the CMAs, during which he performed with Justin Timberlake. He'll perform with Bonnie Raitt and Gary Clark Jr during a BB King tribute later in the night.
