School is almost back in session, which means it’s time to start brushing up on tips for taking the bus. The school bus can be a great resource for time-strapped parents and independence-seeking children alike. But it also needs to be approached with safety and care.

At the Save Our Schools Million Teacher March in Washington DC on July 30th, actor Matt Damon was grilled on his feelings about public school educators. Damon, who attended public school in Boston as a youth and whose own mother is a public school teacher, made some impassioned remarks in defense of teachers.
An new Missouri law, aimed at protecting children from sexual predators, has made it illegal for teachers and their past and present school-aged students to friend each other on Facebook.
MSU Extension has so many programs for youth and adults covering a vide variety of topics. I work with 4-H youth in Gallatin County, but receive emails about programs going on all over the state. Here is some information about the Master Gardener Program and a demonstration they will be having tomorrow at the Gallatin Valley Farmer's Market. I'll be at the market (like I am every Saturday) buying produce, window-shopping for jewelry, and wearing out/socializing my dog. Maybe I'll see you there?!

You may call me and my horse "unlucky" because he is stabled at the barn where the first positive test result came back for EHV-1 in Montana. I honestly call myself lucky because I know they are taking care of all the horses in the barn AND keeping me up to date. Many of you may have gone to the fairgrounds last night for a discussion led by the Montana Department of Livestock. I, however, couldn' make it because I had puppy obedience class.

Controlling your blood pressure may not be at the top of your to do list. However, according to heart health experts, it probably should be. Hypertension – or high blood pressure – is often called a ‘silent killer’ because it often doesn't have symptoms and many people don't even know they have it.

Stop me before i volunteer again!!
I recently gave my friend a magnet that says “Stop me before I volunteer again” and was thinking I should get one for myself. If I’m not working, riding my horse, or playing with my dog, I’m usually volunteering somewhere. Walking dogs at Heart of the Valley, raising money for The National MS Society, teaching first aid classes for the Red Cross... Volunteering is just something that has always been a part of my life. The national volunteer rate went up to 26.8% in 2009, with 63.4 million volunteers donating approximately 8.1 billion hours of services across the country (volunteeringinamerica.gov). Apparently there are other people that feel the same way.
Scholarship Application Writing Tips
Many high school students are graduating soon. Are your children applying for college or college scholarships? Do they need advice and help with what to write? Not only have I written multiple college and scholarship applications, I’ve been able to sit on committees that help disperse funds. Most recently, I was on a committee that read over 80 applications for college scholarships and I began to see a few trends. Here are some easy tips that may help your child stand out (or not stand out--depending) to those people reading the applications.
