A new Gallup survey suggests that Americans, if they can have only one child, prefer that it be a boy. About 40 percent said they'd rather have a boy, while 28 percent said they'd rather have a girl. The rest said they had no preference. The results are virtually the same as those in a poll taken in 1941.

But things have changed since 1941. For one thing, now we have pre-natal sex selection techniques. Some scientists believe the world population is already dangerously out of whack, with an imbalance in birth rates of girls and boys.
