Bill Gates Wants Your Poop— To Be Cleaner.

Well he wants where you do your business to be a little cleaner.  The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation put out a call for a new toilet.  Why on earth would you want to reinvent the toilet?  I’d say They have some good reasons.

These are some high tech toilets! One uses microwave energy to transform human waste into electricity. Another captures urine and uses it for flushing. And still another turns excrement into charcoal.

These toilets are being reinvented to help save lives.  You might be taking that white throne you sit on for granted.

A Not So Smart Toilet

According to the gatesfoundation.org:

The need to make sanitation accessible to the poor is clear:
• 2.5 billion people—40 percent of the world’s population use unsafe toilets or practice open defecation.
• Conventional sanitation—a flush toilet connected to a centralized sewer system—is possible for only a small fraction of people in developing nations.

The consequences of unsafe sanitation can be devastating and last a lifetime:
• Every year, food and water tainted with fecal matter cause up to 2.5 billion cases of diarrhea among children under five, resulting in 1.5 million child deaths.

During one of my tours in Iraq I was accidentally locked inside a building.  This building didn’t have a bathroom—

In the Marines we adapt and overcome.

When you gotta go, you gotta go!

Looks like a good time to reinvent the toilet to me!
