Congrats to the Civil Wars for picking up the Best Country Duo/Group Performance award at the 2012 Grammy Awards. The pair nabbed the trophy for their debut album, ‘Barton Hollow.’ While the Civil Wars, and their music, are obviously quality enough to earn them a Grammy and the national attention that comes along with it, it was frontman John Paul White’s acceptance speech that will be vividly remembered.

Accepting the award during the pre-telecast, which was not televised and was streamed online only, White said, “I just lost a bet” upon stepping on the stage. Lost a bet, huh? He continued, “I bet a man a bottle of whiskey that this would not happen.” Seems like this is the rare case of a bet that you are happy to lose.

White continued by sending props out to his family, saying, “My wife and four kids never see me — this is for my wife, who’s here tonight.” He gave shout outs to each of his four kids and said with a laugh, “I’m obviously home just enough.”

It’s not often that a Grammy recipient can mention whiskey and his kids in a single speech and not raise eyebrows. The duo beat out Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson, Kenny Chesney and Grace Potter and Thompson Square‘s ‘Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not’ for the award.

Congrats to the Civil Wars on their very big win for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards.
