It's officially summertime in Montana, and if you want to make the most of it, here are some great places to go camping that aren't far from Bozeman.

    Fairy Lake Campground

    Fairy Lake Campground is located 26 miles north of Bozeman in the Bridger Mountains.The campground is first come, first served basis, as it does not use a reservation system. There are nine available campsites, and there is not a fee for camping. The road to Fairy Lake Campground is slippery when wet and is not suitable for RV or towed unit travel. A high clearance vehicle recommended.

    To get there, travel 22.5 miles north on MT 86, then go 5 miles west on Fairy Lake Road.

    Langohr Campground

    Lagnohr Campground is located in Hyalite Canyon just 11 miles south of Bozeman. There are 19 campsites with access to fishing, restrooms, and hiking trails. It is open from May 15th - September 15th. This campground does require a reservation and is $14/night. There is a $6 charge for additional vehicles.

    Bear Creek Campground

    Bear Creek Campground is the definition of roughing it. The campground is located in the west Absaroka Mountains. The campsites are spaced out nicely so that  you have plenty of privacy. Campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is no fee and reservations are not needed. The campground is typically open from June 15 to Oct. 31, depending on the weather.

    To get there, travel 5 miles northeast of Gardiner on Jardine Road, then continue 5.5 miles northeast on Bear Creek Road. The access road is not suitable for vehicles that are longer than 21 feet.

    Chisholm Campground

    Chisholm Campground is located on the shoreline of Hyalite Reservoir. There are 10 campsites that are accessible by vehicle. You do need to make a reservation, and campsites are $14/night with a $6 fee for additional vehicles. There is access to fishing, restrooms, and hiking trails. The campground is open from May 15th - September 15th.

    Halfmoon Campground

    This campground does not use a reservation system. Spots are available a first-come, first-served basis. There are 6 campsite available with access to a public restroom. The campground may fill up on weekends & holidays during the summer months and you should arrive early to ensure there is a space available. Halfmoon Campground is open all year long. However, access is limited in the fall and winter due to snow. The road is not suitable for vehicles over 32 feet long.

    To get there, drive 60 miles eat of Bozeman on I-90 to Big Timber. Travel 11 miles north of Big Timber on US 191, then 12 miles west on Big Timber Canyon Rd.
